On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig announced his retirement to a somber crowd at Yankee Stadium. Gehrig, who played in 2,130 consecutive games, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or ALS, a disease that would later bear his name. Gehrig's "iron horse" frame began to deteriorate as a result of his disease and he could no longer endure the daily toll his beloved game was taking on his body.
